Dedicated to local history, the museum’s permanent exhibit traces Native American history, early European and African settlement, the Industrial Revolution, Stanly County at war, education, religion, and even recreation. Located in downtown Albemarle, the site also includes two historic homes. The Freeman-Marks House was built in the early 19th century and is the oldest public building in the town; the Snuggs House was constructed in 1852 and is now used by the museum as exhibition space.
